Reality check: Minister for Social Welfare Pilli Subhaschandra Bose inspecting the damaged portion of the beach road at Uppada near Kakinada on Tuesday. — Kakinada: Minister for Social Welfare Pilli Subhaschandra Bose has said that the cyclone, Khai Muk, wreaked havoc with Uppada and other villages even before the construction of a geo-tube wall could be started (by M/s Garware Wall Ropes Limited). The government would, however, ensure that all the villages in this stretch of the east coast which were vulnerable to erosion, were protected well permanently, he said on Tuesday. During his visit of the damaged portion of the beach road at Uppada, Mr. Bose said he was aware of the perilous conditions in which people of Uppada and other adjoining villages were living during the cyclones. As such he instructed the district administration to look into the possibility of relocating the habitations at safe places. The geo-tube wall which was proposed by Union Minister of State for Defence M.M. Pallam Raju would have contained the damage, he opined. HousingCollector Gopalakrishna Dwivedi said steps were taken to construct houses for those who lost their dwellings, in an area of 15 acres away from the present location to protect them from the tidal waves of Bay of Bengal which have been devouring the coast for a long time. Later, Mr. Bose and Mr. Dwivedi called on the people of Konapapapeta, who were badly affected by the cyclone. Sampara MLA A. Bullabbai Reddy, Kakinada RDO G.C. Kishore Kumar, Assistant Director (fisheries) Jayaraju, Joint Director of Agriculture T. Nandaiah and others were present.
