Mysore: At the end of an intriguing third day’s play Karnataka took the upper-hand against Andhra by reducing it to a meagre 28 for four in 18 overs after setting them a target of 320 runs to get in 110 overs in the second essay in the Group ‘B’ Super League Ranji Trophy tie here on Tuesday. Skipper Y. Gnaneswara Rao (3) and A.S.K. Verma (2) will resume in an attempt to save the game for Andhra on the final day. It needs a further 292 runs for victory with six wickets in hand. Losing wicketsAndhra kept losing wickets at regular intervals in its second innings. Mediumpacer R. Vinay Kumar bowled a probing line and picked up the wickets of opener H. Watekar and wicket-keeper batsman V. Manoj Sai. Spinner Sunil Joshi accounted for B. Sumanth and Andhra was reeling at 19 for three and mediumpacer N.C. Aiyappa then nailed opener L.N. Prasad Reddy, to add to Andhra’s distress. Earlier in the day, some plucky batting display by Andhra’s lower order, spearheaded by M. Suresh (54, 171m, 126b, 8x4s) and G.V. Sarat Babu (25, 33b, 4x4s) helped it to avoid the follow-on as it was bowled out one run ahead of the target, for 218 in 71.2 overs. Joshi scalps fiveLeft-arm spinner Sunil Joshi took his 23rd five-wicket haul, finishing with figures of five for 41. Mediumpacers P. Vinay Kumar and N.C. Aiyappa took three and two wickets respectively. Karnataka secured a first innings lead of 148 runs. In its second essay, the batsmen were in a hurry and departed in quick succession. Karnataka was bowled out for 171 in 48.2 overs. Rahul Dravid scored a fluent half century (50, 115m, 75b, 7x4s). P. Vijay Kumar was the most impressive and successful Andhra bowler with figures of six for 51. The scores: Karnataka — 1st innings: 366. Andhra — 1st innings: H. Watekar c Naidu b Aiyappa 7, L.N.P.
