CPI takes steps to regain foothold in Ganjam

Staff Reporter

People in the area are unhappy with Pradhan, says Patro

The left party has been trying to reach out to its cadre at grassroot-levels

Nityananada Pradhan is likely to contest from Aska on BJD ticket

BERHAMPUR: The Orissa unit of the CPI is trying hard to retaliate and give a fitting reply to the recent resignation of their former State Secretary, Nityananada Pradhan from the party.

The party leaders were quite serious to reorganise the party in its strongholds in Ganjam district as Mr. Pradhan was expected to join the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in near future with an aim to contest from the Aska parliamentary constituency. The Ganjam district unit of the party has already started grass root-level organisational revamping work in Sanakhemundi area of the district. After delimitation Sanakhemundi and Dharakote blocks will be part of the new Sanakhemundi Assembly constituency. This area has sizeable number of CPI supporters. The BJD leaders are planning to woo these CPI cadres to their fold through Mr. Pradhan. So, the CPI leaders are extra careful. Led by the district secretary of the CPI, Prakash Patro the leaders of the party have started reorganising the party cadres from panchayat-level.

Mr. Patro said they have already covered 15 out of 21 panchayats of the Sanakhemundi block by Wednesday.

“Everywhere people are disgusted with Mr. Prdhan for demeaning the name his ancestor Govind Pradhan who was said to be a pioneer of leftist movement in the State by deciding to leave leftist movement,” Mr. Patro said.

‘Just a dream’

According to him the BJD cadres are enjoying a false dream that they would get the real CPI activists on a platter through Mr. Pradhan. No real left activist would prefer to leave the party and join ’opportunist’ party like the BJD.

The State Secretary of the CPI, Dibakar Nayak, had reached the district to enthuse the party cadres to sit up to face the situation created in the district following the resignation of Mr. Pradhan. He held a meeting of the senior members of the party at Goutami, which is called a major stronghold of the CPI. Mr. Patro said their party has decided to contest the Aska parliamentary seat and Sanakhemundi assembly seat for sure. The probable candidates for these seats would be decided by December for early start of organisational work for the elections. Apart from it the party is also thinking of fielding candidates at Aska, Hinjli, Khallikote, Gopalpur and Chatrapur assembly segments of Ganjam district.

It may be noted that Ganjam is the home district of BJD chief Naveen Patnaik and efforts are on to strengthen it in the district through defections from the CPI.
