SALEM: The Salem Corporation conducted a meeting to discuss its ambitious Under Ground Drainage (UGD) project with the representatives of engineering and construction firms on Wednesday. The meeting was conducted as the civic body had called tenders for the project recently. This was the fourth tender call to be issued for the project. Corporation Commissioner K.S. Palanisamy ,making a presentation during the meeting, explained salient features of the project and its benefits to the residents in the city. The project will solve several sanitation-related issues in the city, which has a population of over nine lakh, he said in the meeting. The Commissioner also wanted the firms to use advanced technology for laying sewer pipelines in the city without causing much damage to the roads and other infrastructure. The revised estimate prepared for the project was also highlighted. The Corporation’s revised estimate is Rs. 185 crore based on the scheduled rates for the current fiscal recently. Earlier, it was planned to implement the project at a cost of Rs. 149.39 crore. The Corporation council, which met here on Tuesday, had given its nod for the revised estimate. It had decided to seek grant or loan from the State Government to meet the additional fund requirement, officials said. Mr. Palanisamy said representatives of eight big engineering companies attended the meeting and shared their views. “We are very positive that this time we will be able to finalise a firm for the execution of the project,” he added. Engineers from Commissionerate of Municipal Administration and officials from the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited also attended the meeting.
