Kakinada: Women in India have played a commendable role in the freedom movement and they did extremely well in shaping the country thereafter. The so-called weaker sex continues to guide destiny of the nation at par with men in spite of the varied atrocities they have been enduring since times immemorial. “Unfortunately, they are still looked down upon as inferior to men,” said Allam Appa Rao, Vice-Chancellor of JNTU, Kakinada. Addressing a workshop on ‘Women in nation building’ on the university premises here on Wednesday, Prof. Appa Rao said women might be physically weak but they were equally or even more capable mentally and balanced than men. Several prominent women of yesteryear like Jhanshi Lakshmibai demonstrated this in ample measure. But for their sacrifices, India would have been an altogether different nation. Women of modern India like Kiran Bedi and Kalpana Chawla showed that they possessed the courage to question the arrogance of men and conviction to break free from their shackles in the process of making their marks on the world stage. Those of the current generation should emulate such great women, at least make a beginning, to put an end to male chauvinism once and for all in their own assertive yet affectionate ways. Tributes paidEarlier, Prof. Appa Rao paid floral tributes to the former prime minister, Indira Gandhi, on the occasion of her birth anniversary and described her as a women with steely resolve and volumes of courage. JNTU Registrar V. Ravindra, Allam Nagamani, ONGC DGM Sudeepta Sen, and others spoke.
