Little did the students know that their first teacher in the college would be none other than varsity head
ERUDITE: M. Ponnavaikko TIRUCHI: The first day started off with a bang for 30 students admitted to the Dr. Kalaignar Arts and Science College, a constituent of Bharathidasan University, at Lalgudi, on Wednesday. Their teacher for the first class was none other than Vice-Chancellor M. Ponnavaikko. Prof. Ponnavaikko grabbed the opportunity to motivate the students by handling a session on basic concepts of computing, a subject he is well-versed in. Six new teachers appointed for the four courses: B.B.A., B.C.A., B.Sc. IT, and B.Com., were among the avid listeners. With the teacher in him taking centrestage, the Vice-Chancellor enjoyed every minute of the job, right from making a lively exposition to rubbing the blackboard. And the occasion turned out to be the right opportunity for him to orient the students on how their approach towards education and society as a whole ought to be. Prof. Ponnavaikko drove home the point that India could register real growth only by creating educational opportunities in villages, and commended Transport Minister K.N. Nehru for getting the college started for the benefit of students in several surrounding villages. Though the student strength was less, obviously due to a late start, it is a matter of time before the Lalgudi College would catch up with the University’s constituent college in Perambalur district, the Vice-Chancellor said, adding that students from Lalgudi who travel to colleges in other parts of the district for studying these four courses will be permitted to pursue the programmes at the new college in their hometown from the second semester onwards. He announced that the college would soon be developed into a nodal centre of the University’s Institute for Entrepreneurship and Career Development for offering various skill-oriented programmes.
