TIRUCHI: Collector T. Soundiah inaugurated an adolescent anaemia control programme organised by Parents Trust and Trichy Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Society (TRIOGS), at the Government Girls Higher Secondary Schoolhere on Wednesday.

The haemoglobin level of over 1,000 girl students of the school would be checked in the 11 days starting from Thursday.

Folic acid and iron tablets will be distributed free to those students found to be anaemic. Inaugurating the programme, the Collector said that adolescence was crucial for children as they undergo physical and psychological changes. Hence, it was essential for the student community to keep themselves healthy.

Fifty per cent of women who had died at the time of pregnancy in the district were found to be anaemic. The aim of implementing the nutritious noon meal scheme with eggs thrice a week was to ensure that poor children get healthy food, he said.

Education, he emphasised, was the greatest asset for the children while exhorting the students to set a goal in their lives. T. Jayanthi Ranee, managing trustee, Parents Trust, said that 25 per cent of the country’s population were adolescents and not all of them were healthy. As many as 100 girl students would be checked under the anaemia control programme every day, she said adding that a follow-up would be done after three months.

The Collector distributed prizes to toppers in SSLC and Plus Two examinations on the occasion.
