RAIPUR: The fate of 687 candidates, contesting 51 seats in Chhattisgarh, will be sealed in the second phase of the Assembly elections on Thursday.

Over 88 lakh voters will cast their votes in eight districts in the northern part of the State. As many as 58 women are also in the fray.

Among the contestants are the former Chief Minister, Ajit Jogi in Marwahi, his wife Renu Jogi in adjoining Kota, Bharatiya Janata Party State president Vishnudev Sai (Pathalgaon) and Home Minister Ramvichar Netam (Ramanujganj).

In Bilaspur, Health Minister Amar Aggarwal is waging a tough battle against Anil Tah of the Congress. The former Home Minister, Nand Kumar Patel of the Congress, is pitted against the BJP’s Lakshmi Patel in Kharsia.

The BJP and the Bahujan Samaj Party are contesting all 51 seats, six of which are reserved for the Scheduled Castes and 15 for the Scheduled Tribes. The Congress has fielded its candidates in 48 constituencies, giving three seats to the Nationalist Congress Party in a pre-poll arrangement.

The Election Commission has set up 10,314 polling stations in the districts of Raipur, Bilaspur, Korba, Raigarh, Sarguja, Koria, Jashpur and Janjgir & Champa.

As many as 2,608 polling booths have been declared sensitive and 355 are designated as ‘hypersensitive.’ Most of these booths fall in the areas bordering Jharkhand and Maharashtra, where naxal activity has been reported. Some areas in Sarguja, including Ramanujganj, have a presence of naxal sympathisers, and security there has been intensified.

The Kasdol constituency is the largest in terms of area and electorate, while Manendragarh is the smallest. Bhatgaon has the largest number of candidates of 29.
