ERODE: Cooperative Department, Erode, will improve infrastructure in cooperative institutions in the district under the Integrated Cooperative Development Programme. According to sources in the Department, the National Cooperative Development Corporation, New Delhi, has allotted Rs. 35.64 crore for the district, which will be spent in the next five years. In the first instalment, the Corporation has disbursed Rs. 9.17 crore. The Corporation has allowed the Department to utilise the money for constructing buildings, purchasing machines or equipments, providing share capital, buying computers etc. Sources say the Department will provide the money to fulfil the needs of 206 primary agriculture cooperative banks, six cooperative marketing societies, 12 land development banks, 18 primary cooperative stores, the Erode District Consumer Cooperative Wholesale Store (Chinthamani), Erode District Central Cooperative Bank, 900 milk cooperative societies and few other institutions. So far, the Department has given Rs. 82 lakh which has been spent towards purchasing two lorries, building warehouses and providing share capital to a cooperative store. They say they provided money for two lorries, one each to Gobichettipalayam and Sathyamangalam cooperative marketing societies, share capital assistance to Jeeva Cooperative Store to expand their pharmaceutical store, constructing warehouses of 1,000 MT capacity in Perundurai R.S. Primary agriculture cooperative bank (PACB), 500 MT capacity in T. Ganapathipalayam PACB and another PACB and 250 MT capacity in Karukapalayam PACB. The Department has also provided Chinthamani with Rs. 15 lakh for constructing a new showroom, and a huge sum to milk cooperativesocieties for purchasing 1,690 milk cans. CommitteeThe sources add that the cooperative institutions’ needs are assessed by a committee comprising the Joint Registrar of Cooperatives, the General Manager of the Integrated Cooperative Development Programme, the Special Officer of the Erode District Central Cooperative Bank, the Assistant Directors of Handlooms, Fisheries, Social Welfare and Industrial Cooperative and the District Registrar of Aavin dairy. The committee allots the money. The sources say that handloom and powerloom societies had also been included and money for purchasing looms would be provided.
