Jail for former sales tax officer

Kozhikode: The Kozhikode Vigilance Inquiry Commissioner and Special Judge on Thursday sentenced a former Sales Tax Officer attached to the State Department of Commercial Taxes to three years rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs.5,000 for helping a marble merchant evade taxes and making loss to the State Exchequer.

Special Judge M.K. Kuttikrishnan found the former government employee, A. Soopy hailing from Taliparamba in Kannur district, guilty under Section 13 (criminal misconduct by a public servant) read with Section 13 (1) d (abusing position as public servant – obtaining valuable thing or pecuniary advantage) of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 120 B ( criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.

If the accused failed to remit the penalty he would have to undergo another six months in prison.

The court also awarded one-year rigorous imprisonment to the marble merchant, P.V. Shamsudheen, hailing from Irritty in Kannur district. He was found guilty under Section 120-B of the IPC.

The Kannur Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau registered a case on February 22, 2001 in connection with a raid conducted at the residence of Soopy in the previous year.

The team recovered documents pertaining to the conspiracy he had hatched with the marble merchant to evade taxes.
