Corrections and Clarifications

The 2001 National (U.S.) Household Survey quoted in the article “The Jurassic Auto and Idea Park” (Editorial page, November 20, 2008) said, “daily travel in the U.S. totalled about 4 trillion miles, an average of 14,500 miles per person.” These figures are annual, the sum total and averages of daily travel, clarifies the author P. Sainath, in response to a reader’s query. The use of the word “daily travel” in the report was possibly confusing.

The sixth paragraph of a report “Two-day police custody for Purohit” (November 20, 2008) was “… Sameer Kulkarni, another Malegaon blast suspect, was remanded to one-day police custody on Wednesday. The Khadki police, Pune, will interrogate him in connection with an attack on a pastor Peter David Silway of the Vineyard Workers Church at Bopodi, Pune, in 2007.” It should have been Dapodi, Pune.

The second paragraph of an article “Political fortunes in the time of recession” (“Out of London”, Op-Ed, November 19, 2008) had a reference to Nobel Laureate Paul Krug. A typographical error, it should have been Paul Krugman.
