AG asked to go into law college functioning

K.T. Sangameswaran

CHENNAI: Stating that all is not well with the administration of the Dr.Ambedkar Government Law College here, the Madras High Court on Thursday asked the Advocate-General (AG) to go into the functioning of the institution and its hostel in some detail.

The First Bench comprising Chief Justice A.K.Ganguly and Justice F.M.Ibrahim Kalifulla requested AG G.Masilamani to devote his entire time on Friday (tomorrow), Saturday and Sunday by holding the enquiry, which would be comprehensive.

He would go into every aspect of the running of the institution, including the composition of its faculty members, the money the college received for expenditure, the way it was spent, the number of staff members and teachers, their qualifications, the facilities extended to students, the role played by the Principal, the suspended and the present one, in maintaining academic atmosphere.

The Bench passed the interim order on petitions filed in connection with the clash in the college on November 12. Posting the matter for November 25, it said the AG’s report may be placed before the court on that date.

The court referred to Police Commissioner K. Radhakrishnan’s affidavit in which it was stated that steps had been taken to arrest all the accused concerned in various cases involving college students earlier also. It said “So, it appears that students with criminal record are continuing as students of the said college.”
