VIJAYAWADA: Subabul farmers’ leaders walked out of a meeting convened by the district officials with representatives of paper mill managements and political parties in the conference hall of Sub-Collector’s office on Friday, in protest against the attitude of the managements and the Congress leaders over the issue of purchase at dumping yards. While the farmers demanded that the produce be purchased at specially arranged dumping yards, the managements proposed that the purchases would be made directly in the farm fields. The farmers’ leaders said direct purchases in field would mean exploitation of farmers by the managements and middlemen. The meeting witnessed tense moments when arguments started between leaders of the Telugu Desam party and the Congress. TDP MLA Devineni Umamaheswara Rao criticised the Congress leaders for not making their stand clear on the issue of dumping yards, which showed their “anti-farmer stance” in the issue. He took objection to the manner in which the Congress leaders were trying to “obstruct the progress of talks” to resolve the issue. Jaggayyapeta MLA Samineni Udaya Bhanu, along with some other leaders, represented the Congress in the talks. Farmers’ leaders made clear their unhappiness with the paper mills managements for not cooperating with them in implementing the promises made by the Chief Minister regarding offering a price of Rs. 1,600 a tonne.
