WARANGAL: Both people and politicians of Andhra Pradesh should rise above petty considerations and protect their rights in securing the due share of waters from river Godavari which is under great threat, said M. Panduranga Rao, retired professor of National Institute of Technology (NIT). Making a power-point presentation, Mr. Rao said the Sri Ram Sagar Project (SRSP) constructed with great expectations in 1960s, is slowly losing its efficacy due to accumulation of silt and poor inflows owing to vagaries of nature. Compounding the problem, the Maharashtra government has been constructing a series of projects on the Godavari, The ongoing construction of 12 projects from Jaikwadi to Babli – spread over 422 km-is being built within the water spread area of SRSP. “When all the projects are full, then water will flow into SRSP. If water in SRSP becomes full, it will flow in reverse into Babli. Maharashtra plans to utilise 56 tmc of water through these projects. And Telangana region will turn into a desert,” Mr. Rao opined. He recently authored ‘Impact of Babli and 11 projects on Sri Ram Sagar Project: socio-economic implications for Telangana’.
