Showers in Pudukottai district
Staff Reporter
PUDUKOTTAI: Parts of the district continued to experience moderate showers for the second consecutive day on Thursday.
For the 24 hours ended at 8.30 a.m. on Friday, Keezhanilaikottai registered a maximum of 40 mm, followed by Karambakudi 27 mm; Pudukottai 26 mm; Avudaiyarkovil 25 mm; Aranthangi 24 mm; Manamelkudi 23 mm; Kudumiyanmalai and Nakudi 20 mm each; Tiruymayam 18 mm; Ayinkudi and Iluppur 16 mm each; Karaiyur 14 mm; Meemisal 12 mm and Alankudi 11 mm.
Farmers said that the rain would not be sufficient to save the standing crops. District president of Consortium of Indian Farmers’ Associations G. S. Dhanapathy pointed out that a vast extent of ‘samba’ crop raised in parts of the non-Cauvery Mettur Project (non-CMP) zones in the district was languishing for water.
President of Kallanai Kalvai Ayacutdars Federation A. Ramasamy says that the realisation of the discharge of the Cauvery waters was very poor in the tail-end parts of the delta.
According to official sources, a total of 53,427 hectares had been covered under paddy this season. The district had realised just an average 14.3 mm of rain during November against the usual average of 151.7 mm.
