TIRUCHI: It was the spirit of national integration that bound people of all castes, religions and languages together to release India from the clutches of imperialists.

And now there is a need to strengthen the patriotism of the citizens further to face challenges posed by terrorism, fanaticism and casteism.

‘Velicham’

The Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, Sriperumbudur, has taken up the task by organising ‘Velicham’ a one-hour play depicting the sacrifices made by lesser known freedom fighters to secure the country’s independence from the British kingdom.

The Institute joined hands with the National Service Scheme Department of the Bharathidasan University to stage play at the Bishop Heber College on Friday.

Student audience

The audience comprising hundreds of students, including several NSS volunteers, learnt the sacrifices made by the lesser known leaders such as Kambam Peer Mohamed, Sundaralingam and George Joseph, said the NSS Coordinator of Bharathidasan University K. Kanagaraju.

Seventh presentation

The Folk Troupe of the Institute made its seventh presentation at the College today in the first phase.

So far, it had staged similar programmes at universities and colleges in Sriperambadur, Velur, Salem, Coimbatore, Tiruvnelveli and Madurai.
