Hefty hike in salary likely for Melsanthis

Radhakrishnan Kuttoor

PATHANAMTHITTA: Melsanthis (head priests) and their assistants at the Lord Ayyappa Temple as well as the Malikappuram Devi Temple at Sabarimala are likely to get a hefty hike in their salary soon. Briefing Devaswom Ombudsman R. Bhaskaran, Devaswom Commissioner P.V. Nalinakshan Nair has reportedly recommended for a “fair hike” in the remuneration of the priests which was fixed way back in 1977.

Mr. Nair said it was not at all just that the chief priests of the Ayyappa temple and the Malikappuram temple had been given a monthly salary of Rs.1,750 and Rs.750 respectively for the past 21 years owing to absence of any periodic salary revision during the period.

The Commissioner was of the view that the monthly salary of Sabarimala Melsanthi should be enhanced to not less than Rs.50,000. A hike in the salary of the Malikappuram Melsanthishould also be considered..
