Location change: A view of the Tiruvarur bus stand. TIRUVARUR: Tiruvarur will soon get a new bus stand on a sprawling 11.89 acre site at Thyagaperumanallur on the Nagapattinam-Thanjavur highway. It will be built at a cost of Rs.15 crore with all infrastructure facilities as ‘A’ class bus stand with space to park 51 buses at a time. The municipality had already purchased the new site at a cost of Rs.2.11 crore and sent a proposal to the Commissioner of Municipal Administration for preparing a detailed project report. A. Mathivanan, Municipal Engineer and Commissioner in charge of Tiruvarur Municipality, told The Hindu on Wednesday that the existing bus stand (‘B’ Class) built in 1972 on a four-acre site was now crowded and had facility to park only 25 buses at a time. He pointed out that a new bus stand was necessitated because of the traffic congestion in the existing facility with a steep increase in passenger traffic and the number of buses. The municipality has proposed to get funds from the Tamil Nadu Urban Development Programme-III for construction of the new bus stand and repay the loan in 20 years. After getting administrative sanction from the Government, the new bus stand will be constructed in 12 months. The municipality is expecting an annual revenue of Rs.50 lakh from the new bus stand against the present Rs.16.27 lakh. People of Tiruvarur have welcomed the Municipality’s efforts to construct a new bus stand at Thyagaperumanallur. Traders, consumer and voluntary organisations have appealed to the Collector to take steps for early construction of the new bus stand that will ease traffic congestion on the Thanjavur-Panagal Road in the heart of Tiruvarur town.
