Turn system from Wednesday
Staff Reporter
MADURAI: The Public Works Department plans to introduce turn system of irrigation in the double crop and single crop areas in Madurai and Dindigul districts from Wednesday.
In a statement, Madurai Collector P. Seetharaman said that water was released on September 15 for irrigation in both the areas. Stating that transplantation in the entire area was over, it had been proposed to implement turn system from 6 a.m. on Wednesday, considering the storage and inflow into the dam.
Water would be released for five days and closed for the next five days. The turn system would be modified in future, considering the rainfall and inflow.
The Collector urged the farmers to make use of the available water judiciously.
Water level in the Periyar dam on Saturday stood at 120.60 feet (full level 136 feet) with an inflow of 659 cusecs and a discharge of 1,125 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 62.07 feet (71 feet) with an inflow of 866 cusecs and a discharge of 1,953 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 3,666 mcft.
