Letters to the Editor
The BJP’s support to the Malegaon blast accused is not at all surprising. Defending a group of terror accused is nothing for a party that defended the perpetrators of the Gujarat carnage. It is well known that the post-Godhra rioters had the support of the Gujarat government. The BJP is part of the sangh parivar whose only concern is to marginalise the minorities, and eventually eliminate them. Mohammad Kamran Ahsan, Aligarh Are we to understand from the BJP’s stand that people wearing saffron cannot be tried for any crime, however heinous? What it probably means is — if a terror suspect is a supporter of the saffron forces, the police had better think twice before arresting him or her. Mani Menon, Chennai I am surprised at the hue and cry being raised over the use of the term ‘Hindu terrorism.’ Terrorists cannot be defined as only those planting bombs; they are also those who kill in the name of ideology. In this broad context, Hindus indulging in acts of terror are Hindu terrorists. The Gujarat pogrom and the recent violence in Kandhamal bear testimony to Hindu terror. All religions have extremist elements who claim to be the true defenders of faith and Hinduism is no exception. The moderates should remain vigilant and ensure that bigots do not hijack their religion. Arvind Narayan, Mauritius
