PUDUCHERRY: Parents should understand the interests of children and guide them in the right direction, instead of forcing their likes and dislikes on the children, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly R. Radhakrishnan said on Saturday. Participating at the valedictory function of “Child Rights Week” celebrations on “Every Child Should Access Minimum Social Protection and Rights” organised by a social organisation, he said every person in society had the responsibility of protecting the rights of children. “Parents should bring up the children in a proper manner and provide education. It is the responsibility of the parents that children should grow up into good citizens. They should not force their likes on the children. Rather, they should understand the interests of children and guide them in the right direction,” he said. The Speaker said the government was was taking steps to prevent child labour. Children below 14 years should be sent to school and not to work. The government has brought in laws to prevent child labour and has been taking intense efforts in implementing the rules, he noted.
