HYDERABAD: Former Union Minister P. Upendra on Monday warned the Left parties that there would be a ‘repeat of 1983’ when they spurned the late NTR’s offer of an alliance with the TDP if they continued to dilly-dally on the issue of joining hands with Praja Rajyam. He was speaking at a press conference after being welcomed into PR by its president K. Chiranjeevi. The reaction was in response to a question as to the possibility of PR’s political alliances. Mr. Upendra, who was with the TDP and the Congress before joining PR, said enough had been discussed by the Left parties. When the Left did not appear inclined for a political friendship, there was no reason to expect them. They were anyway poor at reviewing their political actions and equations, he said, and added that given such a situation the PR may well go it alone in the polls. Drawing comparisonsAsked how he would compare the political situation when NTR launched the TDP and with Chiranjeevi launching PR now, Mr. Upendra said similarities were that both were leaders whose faces were well-known. However, the difference was that while then, there was an intense anti-Congress wave that made the going easy for NTR, the PR would find it tough because now there was a triangular fight.
