Meaningful

The photograph of a Kashmiri woman who voted in the second phase of the elections in Lar near Srinagar (Nov. 24) is highly symbolic and meaningful. It should proclaim to the whole world what India has always struggled to convey — that it is a vibrant democracy. It shows the media at their best. We are indeed proud of The Hindu.

The picture is an apt portrayal of courage, hope, and faith. It is a demonstration of engagement with the democratic set-up.

The photograph is a clear proof of a mature and thriving democracy.

On seeing the picture of the Kashmiri woman, my seven-year-old granddaughter said: “she looks like Mother Teresa.” It was a simple but profound comment by a child. Both women were moved by faith, albeit different.

E. Bhagiratha Rao,

Hyderabad
