Letters to the Editor
The article “Pluralist society threatened” (Open Page, Nov. 23) is informative and well written. ‘Jamia’ in Urdu means university, and ‘Millia’ means national. Many eminent scholars were behind its establishment. Sarojini Naidu said of them “… they built up the Jamia Millia stone by stone, sacrifice by sacrifice.” The former President, Zakir Husain, drew a mere Rs.80 a month when he was its Vice-Chancellor. Ko. Shafee Ahmed, Chennai The Jamia Millia Islamia was and is a temple of secularism, ahimsa and freedom struggle. It is a pity that some communal elements look for opportunities to target the minorities and call them unpatriotic. Asra Kamal, Hyderabad
