Political bonding: TDP chief N. Chandrababu calls on CPI State secretary K. Narayana and Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy in Hyderabad on Monday.

HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India State council has finally resolved to join forces with the Telugu Desam Party for defeating the Congress in the next elections.

By a resolution adopted at the State executive meeting here on Monday, the CPI opined that populist schemes and announcement on various issues would not be sufficient to defeat the Congress. There was a need for building up ‘strong alliance’ to take on the ruling party and the CPI had decided to continue its efforts to rope in Telangana Rashtra Samiti into the alliance to make it stronger.

Third alternative

The resolution was introduced by CPI State secretary K. Narayana, a strong votary of allying with the Praja Rajyam . It referred to the call given at the Tirupati conclave to work for an alternative to the Congress and the TDP in the State and the subsequent agitations launched jointly with the CPI(M).

The party decided to work for a ‘new political platform’ and a majority of the non-Congress, non-BJP parties evinced their interest to align with the Left. The decision to enter into alliances with other parties came after the central leadership suggested that Left unity, strengthening of third alternative and increasing representation in elected bodies at the State and national level should form the basis of the tie-up.

It was, therefore, decided to join hands with the Telugu Desam that came forward to support the Left’s efforts to forge an alternative to the Congress and the BJP at the national level besides extending its support to the Left’s efforts to stop the nuclear deal with United States. The resolution would be sent to the central leadership that would make a final announcement about the alliances in the days to come.

Souring ties

In yet another indication of souring relationships, TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu on Monday castigated his TRS counterpart K. Chandrasekhar Rao for provoking people of one region against another. Addressing the extended executive committee meeting of the TDP here, he was apparently referring to Mr. Rao’s remarks in Tirupati extending support to those spearheading a movement for separate Rayalaseema.

On the other hand, he charged some of the Ministers too with indulging in the ‘same game’ and creating confusion among people. In an oblique reference to Marketing Minister M. Mareppa’s comments on separate Telangana, he said it was surprising that those in the government were speaking in different voices.

He announced that his party would join in joint struggle with the Left demanding reduction in the price of fuel, in tune with the fall in international crude to $45 a barrel.
