Pujara notches up another century

GUIDING FORCE: Hyderabad skipper V.V.S. Laxman (left) scored a double century and inspired younger partner Ahmed Quadri notch up his maiden Ranji century, against Rajasthan.

Chennai: Cheteshwar Pujara notched up his third century in successive matches as Saurashtra progressed to an imposing 643 for four against Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy super league cricket match at Rakjot on Monday. Pujara now has 675 runs in five innings at 168.75 this season.

The right-hander faced 173 balls and struck 21 boundaries and two sixes. There were supporting hands for Saurashtra from Sitanshu Kotak (78) and Ravindra Jadeja (42 batting) on day two.

A strokeful double hundred from V.V.S. Laxman 224 (360b, 21x4) took Hyderabad to a mammoth 553 against Rajasthan at Hyderabad. Syed Quadri remained unbeaten on 100.

In Bangalore, Rahul Dravid made 83 and wicketkeeper-batsman Tilak Naidu, 90, in Karnataka’s 347 for seven against Baroda. Sunil Joshi chipped in with 55 and B. Akhil was batting on 42. Paceman A.K. Agral scalped four. Baroda had made 169 in its first innings.

Pravanjan Mullick’s 100 not out was the highlight as Orissa, replying to Punjab’s 60 all out, made 352 in its first innings in Bhubaneshwar. Wicketkeeper-batsman Halhadar Das made 80. For Punjab, paceman Gagandeep Singh took four wickets.

Holder Delhi was in trouble at 199 for six after Gujarat posed 350 in its first innings at Valsad. Debutants Gaurav Chabra (63) and Yogesh Nagar (40 batting) were the main scorers for Delhi. Earlier, Bhavik Thaker made 151 for the host.

In a tight race for the lead at Delhi, Railways and Andhra were level at 208 but the former has two wickets remaining.

Opener Shivakant Shukla’s 131 was the chief contribution as Uttar Pradesh — 290 for six at stumps — surpassed Maharashtra’s 221 in the first innings at Kanpur.

The scores: Super league (day two): At Valsad: Gujarat 350 (Bhavik Thaker 151) vs. Delhi 199 for six (G. Chabra 63, Y. Nagar 40 batting).

At Hyderabad: Hyderabad 553 (T.S. Suman 50, S.A. Pai 85, V.V.S. Laxman 224, S.A. Quadri 100 n.o.) vs. Rajasthan 25 for no loss.

At Bangalore: Baroda 169 vs. Karnataka 347 for seven (R. Dravid 83, T. Naidu 90, S. Joshi 55, B. Akhil 42 batting, A.K. Agral four for 78).

At Bhubaneshwar: Punjab 60 & 59 for one vs. Orissa 352 (N. Behera 74, S. Biswal 54, P. Mullick 100 n.o., H. Das 80, Gagandeep Singh four for 45).

At Delhi: Andhra 208 vs. Railways 208 for eight (S. Sanyal 70).

At Rajkot: Saurashtra 643 for four (C. Pujara 170, B.M. Chauhan 104, S. Kotak 78, R. Jadeja 42 batting) vs. Mumbai.

At Kanpur: Maharashtra 221 vs. Uttar Pradesh 290 for six (Shivakant Shukla 131, Parvinder Singh 68).
