FOR THE HILL HAUL: The overhauled locomotive at Golden Rock workshop. TIRUCHI: The Golden Rock Railway Workshop here has rehabilitated a narrow gauge steam locomotive for use in the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) system. This is the second ‘B’ class steam loco to be rehabilitated by the workshop for the DHR, thereby enhancing the life of the engine. Weighing 16 tonnes, the 80-year-old coal-fired locomotive has been fitted with new cylinders and boilers and other link motion components wherever necessary to boost the performance of the engine, which has been given a fresh coat of enamel painting. Rs. 50-lakh workThe entire work has been carried out without disturbing the heritage value of the engine, say workshop officials. Rehabilitated at a cost of Rs. 50 lakh, the 5.87-metre-long loco will soon be dispatched by road to Tindharia in the DHR section shortly. A technical team from the workshop will oversee the commissioning and trial run of the engine in the hilly terrain there. The loco has capacity to haul three to four coaches and would travel at 15 to 20 kilometres an hour, say the officials. The workshop had rehabilitated a similar loco in 2006 for the DHR. Two more steam locos operating in the DHR section would be rehabilitated at the workshop in the near future.
