Cuddalore
CUDDALORE: The Veeranam tank is getting an inflow of 2,200 cusecs and the district administration, along with the Public Works Department, has been keeping a close vigil on the water level. Collector Rajendra Ratnoo told The Hindu that care was being taken to maintain the level at 45 ft against the total height of 47 ft. Water was let out at the rate of 2,200 cusecs, equivalent to that of the inflow, through Velliangal Odai and other outlets. There was no inundation anywhere on account of discharge from the tank, Mr. Ratnoo said. The confluence point of the Pasimuthan Odai and the Thillai Amman Odai at Chidambaram was of critical importance. Whenever there was flood, there would be reverse flow in the latter, flooding the low-lying areas. But, as the water channels had been desilted and encroachments were removed, the situation was within control. Officials were asked not to go on leave so as to mount round-the-clock vigil. A portion of an old bridge across the Gedilam near Panruti gave way, but since a new high-level bridge was already in place, it did not pose any problem, Mr. Ratnoo said. About 150 residents of Samiarkuppam, a coastal village, had been moved to the community hall. Rainfall was recorded as follows: Annamalai Nagar – 131 mm, Lalpet – 128 mm, Kattumannarkoil – 128 mm, Sethiathope – 104 mm, Chidambaram – 98 mm, Kothavacheri – 80 mm, Parangipettai – 78 mm, Cuddalore – 67 mm. The Collector, along with Superintendent of Police Pradip Kumar and PWD officials inspected all water sources in the district. VillupuramCollector R. Palanisamy has set up a flood control centre at the Collectorate here. The centre will function round the clock. If any place is affected by rain or flood, the affected could call toll-free telephone number 1077 for relief measures.
