Kakinada: A Foundation Course in Human Rights was launched at the Ideal College of Arts and Sciences here on Tuesday. The course is sponsored by University Grants Commission. Participating as chief guest, District Panchayat Officer T. Sravan Kumar said human rights movement gained strength all over the world after the United Nations Human Rights Charter was framed in 1948. The charter envisaged the right to lead a life devoid of any sort of discrimination on the basis of religion, caste, race etc but there have been umpteen instances of violation since the days when human beings emerged as a civilised society. However, all is not lost as most countries have recognised human rights and were attaching greater significance to ensuring people’s basic rights. There is still a long way to go before the world can claim to have reached a milestone in implementing human rights, which is in fact a never ending process. India’s National Human Rights Commission which was formed in 1994, and the State commissions were doing commendable job and a lot more remained to be done, the DPO added. College correspondent P. Chiranjeevini Kumari, course coordinator P. Satyam, lecturer Chintapalli Subba Rao, Syed Salar, Ch. Padmavati, N. Ramesh and G.V.K. Varma spoke. Principal Y. Manikyam presided over the inaugural function.
