THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Opposition walked out of the Assembly on Tuesday protesting that the State government was not taking the need to provide adequate facilities for the pilgrims visiting Sabarimala seriously. Congress MLA Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan introduced the subject during the zero hour in the House seeking permission to move an adjournment motion to discuss the “casual manner in which the government was treating Sabarimala pilgrimage.” Replying to the allegation, Devaswom Minister G. Sudhakaran assured the House that the government departments involved in the conduct of the pilgrimage were putting in coordinated efforts to ensure a complaint-free season. He said a sum of Rs.22 crore had been spent on improving the facilities at Sabarimala and along the route to the temple. Following the Minister’s reply, Speaker K. Radhakrishnan denied Mr. Radhakrishnan to move the adjournment motion. Announcing the walkout, Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy said the Opposition would give the government all support for its endeavours in Sabarimala. But nothing was being done to relieve the pilgrims of the difficulties they had encountered during the previous two seasons. The only activity taking place was the never-ending fight within the Travancore Devaswom Board, and between the board and the government, he alleged.
