Dam designs, maps to be digitised

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Irrigation Department has taken up a Rs 10-crore project to digitise drawings, designs and maps prepared for construction of dams, in the past and now under Jalayagnam, to avoid damage and preserve them for posterity.

Once these documents are computerised, the required map/drawing/design can be accessed by the engineer/official at the click of a mouse. For most of the old multi-purpose projects like Nagarjunasagar, Srisailam, Sriramsagar, Jurala, Gotta Barrage, Somasila and Singur, maps and designs were prepared manually by engineers and kept in files. Over a period of time, the drawings/maps were damaged due to weather variations, and attacks by pests.

A senior Irrigation official told The Hindu here on Monday that apart from this, these files occupied a lot of space in each office.

It had become difficult for engineers to locate the map/drawing of a particular dam from the files. “There are over one lakh maps/designs/drawings connected with the old projects itself.” Over 10,000 designs and drawings have so far been ready.
