20 children fall ill

Staff Reporter

Chennai: About 20 children from Dr. Varadappa Naidu Orphanage in Washermenpet fell ill on Tuesday morning and showed signs of food poisoning.

Some of them were admitted to Communicable Diseases Hospital, Tondiarpet, while others were admitted to Stanley Medical College and Hospital. Corporation health officials, who visited the Orphanage, said there were a few packets of food products that had crossed the expiry date. Tondiarpet police said that the children had consumed ‘rasam’ on Monday night and had fallen ill. The children were admitted with fever but did not show any symptoms of acute diarrhoeal diseases, said Corporation officials. Sixteen of the children were discharged immediately and the rest are under observation.
