CPI, MDMK cadres held for picketing

Demanding the Centre to stop the war in Sri Lanka

STRONG SUPPORT: Leaders of political parties at a picketing organised by the CPI in protest against the attacks on Sri Lankan Tamils, in Chennai on Tuesday.

CHENNAI: Hundreds of workers of the Communist Party of India (CPI), Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) and a few other political parties were arrested on Tuesday when they organised picketing in front of central government offices through out the State urging the Centre to stop the war in Sri Lanka.

CPI State secretary D.Pandian, who led the agitation near the Central Railway station, rejected the idea of meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to press for India’s intervention to ensure a ceasefire.

“There is no point in meeting him when he is not respecting the sentiments of 7 crore Tamils and putting an end to the war against the Tamils,” he said.

He said the Centre had not responded favourably to the resolutions adopted in the on October 14 all-party meet and in the Assembly.

“The DMK has seven Ministers in the Union Cabinet, but they have not said anything,” he said.

Senior CPI leaders R. Nallakannu, A.M.Gopu, S.S.Thiagarajan, former MLA G. Palanisamy. MDMK deputy general secretary Mallai Sathya, Puthiya Tamizhagam leader K.Krishnasamy, Tamil Nationalist Movement leader P. Nedumaran and Nationalist Congress Party leader Tindivanam Ramamurthee participated.
