TDP, PR eyeing BC votes

Special Correspondent

KURNOOL: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Praja Rajyam (PR) are eyeing backward class vote bank in Kurnool Parliament constituency.

While the TDP proposed to field a BC candidate for Parliament, PR is closely watching the moves of the TDP to bring into its fold the unrepresented BC communities.

Valmiki (Boya) is a predominant community in Kurnool Parliament with its considerable presence in five out of seven segments. Kuruva (shepherds) occupy the second place with a strong presence in four Assembly segments. Padmasali (weavers) occupy the third place with a majority in Yemmiganur and Kodumur.

Neglected communities

According to PR leaders, TDP could not accommodate all BC communities in the next elections. The neglected communities could be targeted by offering the seats in their respective constituencies. None of the mainstream TDP leaders are willing to contest from the Parliament seat. K.E. Krishma Murthy who contested from the seat several times expressed his wish to shift to Assembly polls this time.

On the other hand, formers Ministers B.V. Mohan Reddy, K.E. Prabhakar and district president Byreddy Rajasekhar Reddy too preferred Assembly election.

Fresher

In the event of not finding a suitable candidate, the TDP is likely to field a fresher from BC community.

The division of BC vote bank between PR and TDP will benefit the Congress indirectly.

In all likelihood, the sitting MP Kotla Jayasuryaprakasa Reddy will be renominated from the Congress party.

The Congress has strong base among SC voters and Muslim voters, which helped Mr. Reddy to secure nearly two lakh vote majority last time.
