Udhagamandalam: With a call to lawyers to ensure that they commanded respect in the courtrooms, national Law Day was celebrated by the Nilgiri Bar Association (NBA) here on Wednesday. Participating as the chief guest, prominent Tirupur based lawyer and author V. Lakshmanan said that advocates should not only adhere to a dress code but also conduct themselves in a manner which ensured that respect automatically came their way. Adverting to the ‘court crafts’ which the lawyers, particularly the juniors, should adopt, he said that they should uphold decorum, decency and dignity. It will facilitate mutual respect between the bar and the bench and will help in upholding the dignity of the profession. The President of NBA Y.B. Bheeman, who presided, said that the association was celebrating Law Day after a gap of about 26 years. He emphasised the need to tackle the problems relating to the delay in the disposal of cases. Senior advocate R. Sunder expressed concern over the erosion and degradation of the system. Senior advocate N. Krishnamoorthy said that the law should not differentiate between people and communities and urged his colleagues to reflect over the state of the judicial system vis-a-vis the common man. Among those present in the function were District Judge Krishnamoorthy and Sub Judge Joseph David.
