Letters to the Editor
If Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram’s assertion that we are not in a recession is true, what can be the reason for the increasing all-round layoffs? Is it a confirmation of jobless growth where there is a reduction of employment with the increase in productivity due to technological innovation? In this scenario, should not the system provide for humane alternatives to the surplus labour force? Instead of introspecting on these issues, the Minister talks about revisiting and reviewing reforms. Kasim Sait, Chennai The assumption that India is nowhere near a recession is dangerous because it contradicts what is really happening in all sectors of the economy. That we are under a recession is a fact accepted by the captains of industry. The country cannot afford another round of casual approach to the economic threats that loom large. K. Baskar, Chennai
