dated November 27, 1958: Nuclear tests

Mr. Nikita Khrushchev, Soviet Prime Minister, in a letter published in London on November 26 rejected the proposal of the United States and Britain for a yearly suspension of nuclear tests. One year was approximately the time needed to prepare for further tests, he wrote to the group of the campaign on nuclear disarmament. To talk about suspending tests for one year after having carried out intensive tests was like declaring a hunger-strike until dinner after a substantial lunch, Mr. Khrushchev said. He hoped the efforts of the British public would be directed to the earliest achievement of an agreement on the universal ending of nuclear tests for all time.
