A movie for the multiplexes

Ziya Us Salam

PANAJI: The critically acclaimed Tamil film Mudhal Mudhal Mudhal Varai seemed to have crossed over to the popular realm on Wednesday at a well-attended screening at the ongoing International Film Festival of India here.

Directed by debutant Krishnan Seshadri Gomatam and claimed to be the first ‘metro movie’ in Tamil, the film is aimed at the urban audience and deals with the aspirations of today’s educated metropolitan youngsters.

Educated audiences

Speaking after the screening, Gomatam said: “Generally Tamil films are meant for the masses. However, this is a movie for the multiplexes. We all don’t go to the same school, we don’t dress alike. Why should our movies be alike? However, I have not made a film that an Indian cannot identify with. The value system and the culture are very much intact. I am looking at educated audiences who are ready to think and are not necessarily poor.”

Likely to be dubbed

Starring newcomers in important roles, the 160-minute-film is likely to be dubbed into other languages, including Hindi, after being opened in the Indian Panorama section here. “The characters have a universal appeal. The idea is to take the region out of the regional cinema. I have not adopted a linear approach. It is a multi-layered film for the discerning audiences.”

At the conclusion of the show, members of the audience were heard comparing it to Aamir Khan’s Taare Zameen Par. The film is about the making of a film itself, a cinematic metaphor for the Hindu belief that life and death is a continuum.
