BESCOM violated norms, says KRV

Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE: The Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (Praveen Shetty faction) has alleged that the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) has issued power to a private educational institution from the express line violating all norms.

Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, president of the Davangere unit of the vedike K.G. Yellappa said power should have been given for the comprehensive drinking water project of Davangere city from the express power line. Electricity should be given only for “highly essential services” such as drinking water supply. There had been a serious power problem in the State and BESCOM, with great difficulty, had been managing power distribution, although there was a wide gap between demand and supply. BESCOM had resorted to frequent power cuts and even irrigation pumpsets were not given the required power. When such was the case, how could BESCOM give power to a private institution from the express line, when it should have been given only for essential services, he asked. He quoted some BESCOM officials as saying that the institution had paid “fees” of Rs. 14,150 to get power supply from the express line, but wondered whether the common man would be treated in a similar manner. Meanwhile, BESCOM sources told The Hindu that a few officials had unknowingly sanctioned the power , and claimed that it had now been corrected.
