Aged couple die in wall collapse

Staff Reporter

ARIYALUR: An aged couple of Koovathur village were reportedly crushed to death under the debris of a wall that fell on their thatched shed from a neighbouring building due to the heavy rains on Tuesday night. The victims were identified as Periyanayagasami (75) and Amala (65).

The heavy rains caused a major breach on the Chennai-Kumbakonam Road near Jayankondam. The breach was caused by water overflowing from the Ponneri tank.

About 2,000 acres of paddy crop was submerged under water due to the incessant rains.

Almost the entire taluk of Udayarpalayam, including Meensurutti, Andimadam, T. Pazhur and Jayankondam plunged into darkness due to the damage caused to electric lamp posts at several places in and around Jayankondam.
