SRIVILLIPUTTUR: The Virudhunagar Collector, K. Raghupathi, on Wednesday distributed identity cards to 52 persons under the Scheduled Tribes Welfare Board at Thaniparai near here. Addressing a function, he said the Scheduled Caste people were not aware of the benefits due for them due to their poor literacy rate. Stating that Tamil Nadu Government had made one per cent reservation for them in education and employment, he said that if any member of the ST community went for higher education, they were sure to get jobs. The Government had brought in legislation banning others buying their land in 1991 in order to protect their traditional rights and property. People in the age group of 18 and 65 years were eligible to become members of the welfare board. Among other benefits, the members were provided with insurance cover for death due to accident for Rs. One lakh, and Rs. 15,000 for the dependents in case of natural death of the membersand Rs. 2,000 towards their last rites. The girl wards of the members would get Rs. 1,000 educational assistance for 10th and 11th standard, Rs. 1,500 for Plus two, Rs. 1,500 for graduation, Rs. 2,000 for post graduation. For hostellers, the educational assistance is Rs. 1,750 for those undergoing graduation and Rs.3,000 for post-graduate students. The Mahalir Thittam, Project Officer, N. Savithiri, Sivakasi Revenue Divisional Officer, B. Ganesan, the Adi-Dravida Welfare Officer, Packiyam Devakribai, were among those who were present.
