Looking like ISLANDS: Several houses and temporary shelters in Kargil Nagar remain marooned on Wednesday.

CHENNAI: Hundreds of houses in Kargil Nagar and Rajaji Nagar in Tiruvottiyur have remained marooned for a few days now.

Residents of Kargil Nagar said they had to wade through stagnant rainwater that was up to the waist level on several interior lanes. D. Kantha, a resident of Kargil Nagar, said that water had entered several houses in the locality and the situation was worse in Rajaji Nagar. Several families have vacated their homes temporarily to escape inundation.

“It would take three months for the water to dry up. We have to wade through knee-deep water till then. The stagnant rainwater around the houses is also a breeding ground for mosquitoes,” she said.

Residents said the municipality took measures to pump out water but it was only a temporary measure. The situation had remained the same for over a decade now.

M.Amirtharaj, secretary of Kargil Nagar Welfare Association, said most of the tsunami affected families who had been temporarily settled in Kargil Nagar had been shifted to Ernavoor.

Every year, Kargil Nagar is inundated with four-foot-deep water during the monsoon. Residents also suffer frequent power cuts. Sewage-mixed rainwater that overflowed from the open stormwater drain passing through the area added to the sanitation problems in the locality.

Tiruvottiyur municipal officials said the stagnant water in the area would be drained out on Thursday.
