Sen back in court, but no work assigned

Special Correspondent

Kolkata: Justice Soumitra Sen of the Calcutta High Court whose removal was recommended by Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan earlier this year, is back in court.

Justice Sen has been coming to court for the past few days but has not been assigned any Bench, sources in the High Court told The Hindu here on Wednesday.

His lawyer Subhas Bhattacharjee confirmed, “Justice Sen is sitting in his chamber.”

“We are still awaiting intimation [regarding his removal] from any quarters — whether it be Parliament or the Union Law Ministry,” Mr. Bhattacharjee, said. “Normally such recommendations are referred to Parliament.”

In September, Union Law Minister H.R. Bhardwaj said the Centre had decided to approach Parliament for impeachment of Justice Sen.

Justice Sen rejected the CJI’s advice to resign or seek voluntary retirement after he was found guilty, in an in-house inquiry, of misconduct in a case of misappropriation of public money.
