“Rahil Sheikh traced, not held”

Staff Reporter

Mumbai: Mohammed Rahil Sheikh, a key accused in the Mumbai 2006 serial train blast case has been “traced” and not arrested by the Interpol in London, Rakesh Maria, Joint Commissioner (Crime), Mumbai told The Hindu on Wednesday.

Identifying the accused as Mohammed Rahil Sheikh, he said Rahil is the brother of Muzammil and Faizal Sheikh, arrested in the train blast case.

Mumbai Police Commissioner Hassan Gafoor said the London Interpol had “traced and detained” only one person “around two to four days ago” in connection with the July 11 blast. He said two of Rahil’s brothers were already under arrest in the case.

Mr. Gafoor said all the relevant documents had been sent to the London police. There was a red corner notice against Rahil in 2007.

Although the Mumbai police top brass did not elaborate on the documents, Mr. Maria said they included the charge sheet which mentions two Indian nationals and two foreign nationals as absconding. Rahil, a resident of Mumbai, is believed to be one of the Indian nationals.
