Gandhian economic vision holds the key, says foreign scholar

Staff Reporter

‘Neglect of village economy responsible for severe financial crisis in developing countries’

NARSAPUR: Mark Lindley, Gandhian scholar and former professor of Harward Univesity, USA, on Thursday said the Gandhian model of village economy was the panacea to the present global economic meltdown.

Delivering a guest lecture hosted by the Gandhian Study Centre at Sri Y.N. College here, he said the Gandhian thought with special reference to his theory of village economy held ‘great relevance’ now even in the developed countries passing through a severe economic recession.

He held the neglect of village economy responsible for the third world countries and the developed countries suffered from the severe financial crisis at present in the backdrop of globalization.

Prof. Lindley observed that the capitalistic economy had no human face. He highlighted the need for India and the other developing societies to embrace the Gandhiji’s model of village economy and ‘swadeshi’ to upkeep the health of their economies and attain self sufficiency without the shade of any external force. G.V.K.Rama Rao chaired the programme. The Gandhian Study Centre Director D. Venkateswara Rao welcomed the gathering.
