dated November 28, 1958: Imperial tradition broken

A 2,500-year-old imperial tradition was broken when the selection of the beautiful commoner girl as a consort of the Crown Prince Akihito was officially announced on November 27. Japan’s future Empress is 24-year-old Michiko Shoda, daughter of the president of a well-known flour mill company. The Imperial Household Agency spokesman announcing the choice said the selection of Miss Shoda as Crown Princess was unanimous at this morning’s ten-member Imperial Household Council meeting, presided over by Premier Kishi which lasted 42 minutes. The consort is a graduate of the well-known Sacred Heart Catholic Convent in Tokyo. Before deciding on Miss Shoda, there had been some question regarding her religious suitability in view of her Catholic education, whereas Japan’s Imperial household was the fountainhead of the Shinto religion, but apparently she was found satisfactory.
