A loss to the nation: Buddhadeb

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA:Veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu and West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee condoled in separate messages the death of the former Prime Minister, V.P. Singh.

Expressing his profound grief, Mr. Basu said that Mr. Singh’s death was a loss to national politics.

Mr. Singh had always fought against the rise of communal forces and had called for uniting secular and democratic parties to counter them, Mr. Basu recalled.

As Prime Minister, Mr. Singh had taken important steps for the benefit of the backward classes, Mr. Basu said.

Mr. Bhattacharjee said the death of V. P. Singh was a great loss to the nation.

He recalled Mr. Singh’s services to the nation in various categories.

“He was an honest and secular politician,” Mr. Bhattacharjee said.
