U.S. offers assistance

NEW DELHI: Several countries including the U.S., Britain, Japan, Canada and Kazakhstan have condemned the killing of civilians in Mumbai with Presidents of some countries sending in their condolences.
Secretary-General of the Arab League and Foreign Ministers of Oman, Israel, Australia and Canada called up External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee expressing condemnation, condolences and solidarity.
Japan expressed strong indignation and hoped that Indians would overcome this hardship soon. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown hoped the “outrageous attacks” would be met with a vigorous response.
The U.S. has offered “extensive assistance” to deal with the crisis. The Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lawrence Cannon, said his country stood firmly united with the Indian government in condemning the violence.
Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev stressed the need for strengthening international cooperation in combating terrorism.
Israeli Vice Prime Minister Tzipi Livni said her government was concerned and was trying to ascertain the situation of Israelis in Mumbai.
