Massive effort: Work to connect houses to the drainage network in progress at Seethammadhara in the city on Thursday. —

VISAKHAPATNAM: Even as the massive underground drainage scheme covering several parts of the city is going on, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation has taken up works to connect parts of the city to its sewage treatment plant (STP) on the Beach Road.

Some 4,000 house service connections are being given in four locations of the city. The four locations are: Balayya Sastry Layout, Jodugullapalem area, Police Quarters and Visalakshinagar.

“Some 4,000 identified connections in these areas will be connected to the sewage treatment plant near Appu Ghar,” Superintendent Engineer (Projects) C.G.K. Raju told The Hindu.

Only part of the Balayya Sastry Layout is being taken up for connecting to the old STP. The other parts of Sitammadhara and Balayya Sastry Layout will be linked to one of the treatment plants that are part of the underground drainage work going on now.

Digging under way

He said the digging of the 4,000 connections up to the compound of the respective houses is likely to be completed by December.

Thereafter, it is the responsibility of the house-owners to connect the outlet from their premises to the compound wall. There are, however, instances of the outlet not being connected to the drainage for a variety of reasons, including absentee landlords etc.

The SE said the 25 million litres per day (MLD) capacity STP near Appu Ghar was fully operational and could take the load of the 4,000 connections being added to it now. The STP treats sewerage from underground drainage connections completed in earlier phases.

The ongoing underground drainage work covering the central parts and stretching up to Gopalapatnam taken up at a cost of Rs.244.44 crores under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission is scheduled for completion by 2010. Planned to cover 6.24 lakh population for now, the scheme includes three STPs.
