Rice discusses situation with Zardari

Nirupama Subramanian

ISLAMABAD: U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice spoke to Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari on the phone on Thursday and discussed the regional situation and bilateral ties with him.

Presidential spokesman Farahtullah Babar said he was not aware if the Mumbai attacks and relations with India were discussed.

He said the conversation was about Pakistan’s role in the “war on terror.” The Friends of Pakistan initiative for helping Pakistan out of its economic crisis was also discussed. Also, the United Jihad Council, a group of more than a dozen jihadist groups, including the Lashkar-e-Taiba, distanced itself from the attacks in Mumbai, Dawn News reported.
